Damiano Cunego made his winning mark at the 43rd Amstel Gold Race, crossing the finish line first ahead of the 2006 winner, Frank Schleck, and Alejandro Valverde.


The Lampre team captain proved to be in great shape as he attacked the 257 kilometres from Maastricht to Valkenbur better than anyone else. The Cauberg climb proved decisive as the cyclist from Verona positioned himself just behind Schleck only to jump past him just 150 metres from the finish line.


For Campagnolo, Cunego's victory is the third success in April alone in the wake of victories by Devolder and Boonen in the most recent two classics in Northern Europe, both crossing the finish line ahead of the pack with help from the Record group. Now Campagnolo is hoping for a poker hand on Sunday 27 April in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
