The ultra-sophisticated Campagnolo EPS electronic groupset made plenty of waves when its latest V3 version was introduced last year. Maintaining the universally lauded performance characteristics of the V2, the new version of EPS incorporates a slimmer internal battery to guarantee compatibility with even the slenderest of aero frames available in addition to an entirely new interface. The new interface, with its ability to communicate information wirelessly was the subject of much attention, primarily because it permits the groupset to be controlled in a 360° manner with a smartphone via the free MyCampy app.
While the application gives the rider the possibility to personalize every aspect of his or her EPS groupset via Bluetooth connection with his or her smartphone, a second antennae inside the V3 interface allows for communication via ANT+. It is this antenna that allowed Campy Tech Lab engineers to work alongside the technicians from the Wahoo Fitness company to develop compatibility between EPS V3 and the ELEMNT GPS cycling computer. The increasingly popular ELEMNT head unit now has an additional feature to improve the cycling experience as the recently launched firmware update will allow cyclists to read exact gear position and battery charge level while riding and without having to look at anything but the handlebar. No more guessing how many gears you have left and no more awkward and unsafe bending of the neck to have a look at the cassette while in the saddle. By locating the gear positioning information conveniently on the cycle computer screen, the cyclist can greatly reduce the time his or her eyes aren’t watching the road ahead.
