Stage and overall victory for the Team Lotto-Soudal.
Double success for Lotto Soudal during the last stage of the Tour de Wallonie. Jens Debusschere sprinted to the victory in Waremme and took his first win since the fifth stage of last year’s Baloise Belgium Tour. Tim Wellens won the general classification after he took three bonification seconds during a furious opening phase of the race. Wellens as well as Quinten Hermans finished the Tour de Wallonie in the same time, but eventually the cumulated stage results proved to be decisive. During the hectic start of the race, many riders attacked. Also Tim Wellens was up there and won the first intermediate sprint, which earned him three bonification seconds. That way, he was placed in the same time as the leader Quinten Hermans. Somewhat later, a big group of riders escaped the peloton, including a couple of riders who were close on the general classification. Tosh Van der Sande represented Lotto Soudal and did an excellent job for the team. In the peloton, Lotto Soudal and Telenet-Fidea led the chase. They had to give their all, but when some other teams decided to cooperate, the advantage of the break visibly decreased. Some riders tried to avoid a bunch sprint but were caught in the final kilometres. Eventually, it was Lotto Soudal rider Jens Debusschere, atop on his Ridley fully equipped Campagnolo, who sprinted to the victory.
