Preview of Nova Eroica California

Preview of Nova Eroica California

Saturday 30th April sees one of the most taxing and beautiful gravel events around.

To help you dream bigger and ride stronger.

Which is exactly the same philosophy as Nova Eroica California, which takes place on Saturday 30th April 2022 over some of the most challenging and spectacular roads the central coast California has to offer.

Nova Eroica California offers two routes – the 97-mile ‘long route’ and the 72-mile ‘short route’. Let’s dig down into both.

First up, even with your Campagnolo Ekar groupset maximising your cycling efficiency, the 97-mile long route will test the mettle of every rider, no matter what your experience.

That’s down to the double trouble of over 7,500ft of climbing and around 30 miles of ‘strade bianche’. The gravelly white roads are best tackled with tubeless tyres to complement your gravel wheels.

As for the parcours, at 8am riders head 14 miles south to the seaside village of Cayucos. That’s merely a warm-up as riders will stop for coffee and breakfast before the official 9.30am start. From here, the first challenge of the day awaits as riders head toward the 10km climb up the strade bianche of Santa Rita Creek Road.

There’s brief respite with an exhilarating, technical and beautiful 10km descent that flies through the town of Templeton, renowned for its fields upon fields of vineyards. It’s then onto the infamous Kiler Canyon, featuring steep, thin sections of gravel that could see the most experienced rider dismount and push.

Thankfully, the effort’s worth it as there’s an imminent rest at the Halter Ranch Vineyards (though we’d recommend a refuelling energy drink over the finest red!).

Breathe in the air, breathe in the view and then prepare for the final big challenge of the day – the Cypress Mountain

The steep, winding ascent heavily contributes to the overall tally of 7,500ft of climbing but, once tamed, enjoy the thrilling descent back to Cambria where you’ll revel in the Eroica Festival, fine wine and stunning coastal sunset.

As for the ‘short route’, that euphemistic moniker still requires conquering 72 miles of which 56 miles is pavement and around 16 miles is gravel.

Cyclists will need a fair bit of fitness, as you’ll face 6,000ft of climbing around the same Californian coastline, Templeton vineyards and challenging Cypress Mountains as those battling the ‘long route’.

Thankfully, once you’ve reached the peak of the Cypress Mountains, your Nova Eroica California challenge finishes with a breath-taking 15-mile descent to the Cambria finish line.

The Nova Eroica California is one of the most challenging and beautiful one-day gravel events around. But there are a number of Nova Eroica events around the world that’ll also satiate your appetite for gravel riding, including Nova Eroica South Africa (6-8 May 2022), Nova Eroica Switzerland (18-19 June 2022) and Nova Eroica Buonconvento (25 June 2022).

In short, if you’re looking to push your Campagnolo to the limits, there’s an event for you.

Good luck to all the forthcoming Nova Eroica California.
